Running the VMware VCSA Migration Assistant

This is part one in a four part series on upgrading to vSphere 6.5

You can find the rest of the series here

You will receive the following error if running VMware Update Manager on Windows server while trying to upgrade a vCenter Server Appliance from 6.0 to 6.5-

'Unable to retrieve the migration assistant extension on source vCenter Server. Make sure migration assistant is running on the VUM server.'

Update: I discovered that VCSA v6.5 comes bundled with VMware Update Manager (previously VCSA users had to install VUM on a separate Windows Server instance). My recommendation would be to uninstall VUM from Windows Server prior to installation, skip this section and move on to part 2 of this guide- Upgrading from VCSA 6.0 to 6.5 Part 1. If you are not currently running VMware Update Manager you can also advance to the next section without issue.

If you like making life more difficult a challenge, continue here!

If you haven’t already, you can download the latest version of vSphere here

Copy the contents of \\migration-assistant to the VUM server

Execute

\\migration-assistant\VMware-Migration-Assistant.exe

Confirm your current VCSA password and you should be greeted with the following screen

Leave this command prompt running and move on to part 2 of this walkthrough
